Clinical pathology is the routine examination of body fluids other than blood, mainly urine and stool. These are among the most commonly requested laboratory tests because the samples are simple to give and the results can tell your doctor a lot. Clinical pathology examines samples such as urine and stool. These routine tests can show signs of infection, kidney changes and other common problems.
A urine examination usually looks at the colour and clarity of the sample, its chemical content (for example sugar, protein and pH) and what can be seen under the microscope, such as cells or crystals. A stool examination looks for signs such as blood, parasites or their eggs, depending on what your doctor has asked for.
Doctors request them for symptoms such as burning or frequent urination, fever or stomach upset, during pregnancy check-ups, and as part of general health check-ups.
Collect the sample in a clean, sterile container. The laboratory can give you one. For urine, an early-morning midstream sample is usually preferred; for stool, a small amount is enough. Bring the sample to the laboratory soon after collection.
When you hand over the sample, ask when the report will be ready. You can choose a printed report or a WhatsApp copy.
